Ceramic, carbon, and dyed films from 3M, XPEL, SunTek, LLumar, Suntek, and Pure Glow — heat rejection, longevity, warranty, and price across the major film brands.
By Sean Kiffor
Choosing window tint film is like choosing tires — the brand matters less than picking the right tier for your use case. But there are real differences between manufacturers. Here's the 2025 lineup compared.
How to compare films
Four spec lines matter:
1. **Heat rejection at the same VLT** — how much infrared heat the film actually blocks
2. **UV rejection** — both UVA and UVB (most premium films block 99%+)
3. **Color stability** — does it fade purple over 5 years
4. **Warranty terms** — lifetime is common, but what does "lifetime" mean
The major brands
3M
Long-standing brand, three film series: Color Stable (dyed-and-carbon hybrid), Crystalline (ceramic), Ceramic IR. Crystalline is the heat-rejection champion among ceramic films but commands a premium price.
XPEL
Better known for PPF but their PRIME tint line (XR PLUS, XR BLACK, XR) is increasingly common. XR PLUS is a strong ceramic competitor; XR BLACK is a great mid-tier option.
SunTek
Workhorse mid-tier brand. CIR ceramic is reliable; CXP is a strong carbon. Wide installer network means easy local service.
LLumar
The most installed film in the US by total square footage. ATR (carbon) and CTX (ceramic) are the go-to mid- and high-end picks. Warranty network is the biggest of any brand.
Pure Glow
Smaller but rising. Their nano-ceramic line is competitive on heat rejection; pricing typically beats 3M Crystalline.
Madico
Established in commercial / residential film; their auto line is solid but quieter market presence than the others.
Tier picks by use case
Budget tier ($150-$300 installed for a sedan)
- **Carbon film** from any of the major brands (LLumar ATR, SunTek CXP, 3M Color Stable)
- No metallic interference with radio/GPS
- 5-10 year color stability
- 30-40% heat rejection
Mid tier ($300-$550 installed)
- **Ceramic film** from a mid-tier brand (SunTek CIR, LLumar CTX, XPEL XR PLUS)
- 50-60% heat rejection at 35% VLT
- 10-15 year color stability
- Lifetime warranty (transferable on most)
Premium tier ($550-$1,000+ installed)
- **High-end nano-ceramic** (3M Crystalline, premium XPEL, premium LLumar)
- 70%+ heat rejection at 35% VLT — noticeable interior temp difference
- 15+ year color stability
- Lifetime non-transferable warranty (sometimes transferable for a fee)
What "lifetime warranty" actually covers
- ✓ Color shift to purple
- ✓ Bubbling / peeling
- ✓ Delamination
- ✗ Damage from physical impact (rocks, scratches, mishandling)
- ✗ Damage from improper cleaning (ammonia products)
- ✗ Coverage transfers usually require shop registration at install (this is where SalesThumb's auto-warranty PDF saves customers months later)
Our pick for daily drivers
SunTek CIR or LLumar CTX at 35% front side / 20% rear. Wide installer network, lifetime warranty, ~50% heat rejection. Costs ~$400-$500 installed for a sedan.
Our pick for performance cars / supercars
3M Crystalline. The heat rejection is genuinely measurable and you can feel the interior temperature difference. Costs more but exotic owners typically don't blink.
What we tell first-time tint customers
The film brand matters less than choosing a ceramic (any brand) over a dyed film. Ceramic at the same VLT will reject 2-3× more heat than dyed. That's the upgrade that matters.
