PPF is the highest-ticket trade in the aftermarket — and the most demanding to start. Here's the real startup cost, training, equipment, and pricing path to a profitable PPF shop.
By Sean Kiffor
Paint protection film carries the biggest tickets in the aftermarket — full-vehicle jobs run $5,000+ — but it's also the hardest trade to enter well. Here's what it actually takes to start a PPF business in 2026.
How much does it cost to start a PPF business?
- Entry (mobile/single bay, using precut patterns): $15,000–$40,000
- Fixed shop with a plotter + climate control: $50,000–$120,000+
PPF is capital-heavy because the film is expensive (60-inch rolls cost thousands), and quality demands a clean, climate-controlled space.
1. Training is non-negotiable
PPF mistakes are expensive — a botched hood wraps thousands of dollars of film into the trash. Invest in a real certification course and rack up reps before you take paid work. Learn DAP (Design Access Program) precut software early; hand-cutting on the customer's paint is a liability.
2. Build a clean, controlled space
Dust is the enemy. You need a sealed, well-lit, climate-controlled bay. This is why PPF doesn't start as cheaply as tint or mobile detail.
3. Equipment + film
A plotter or DAP subscription, quality squeegees and slip/tack solutions, a steamer, and good lighting. Stock a primary film line (XPEL, SunTek, STEK, 3M) and track every inch of every roll.
4. Price by coverage tier
Partial front, full front, track package, full vehicle — each a clear tier. See our [PPF cost guide](/blog/ppf-cost-paint-protection-film-pricing-2026) for 2026 ranges. Your margin lives in tracking roll inches per job.
5. Protect your margin with roll tracking
The fastest way to go broke in PPF is losing track of film. [PPF shop software](/industries/ppf) tracks 60-inch rolls by the inch, deducts on job completion, and flags low stock — so you always know your real material cost. See the [best PPF shop software](/best-ppf-shop-software) breakdown.
6. Warranty + pre-install inspection
Document every rock chip and paint flaw before film goes on (customer signs off), and register the manufacturer warranty on every install. Both protect you from claims.
The takeaway
PPF rewards patience and capital. Train thoroughly, build a clean bay, price by coverage tier, and track film to the inch from your first job — that's how the highest-ticket trade stays the highest-margin one.
