PPF brand wars get personal in installer Facebook groups. Here's a calmer comparison of the major options.
How to compare PPF brands
Four spec lines that actually matter: 1. Self-healing temperature — how hot does the film need to get to heal scratches 2. Stain resistance — how does it handle bug splatter, road tar, sap 3. Optical clarity — does it yellow over time, or stay invisible 4. Warranty terms — 10-year is industry standard; transferability varies
The major brands
XPEL Ultimate Plus The market leader by total volume. Self-healing at moderate temperatures (sun + warm water works). Stain resistance is very good. Optical clarity stays good for 7-10 years. 10-year manufacturer warranty, transferable.
Best for: shops that want the recognized name brand for marketing. Customers Google "XPEL" and feel comfortable. Premium pricing reflects the brand premium.
SunTek Reaction Direct competitor to XPEL Ultimate Plus. Self-healing performance is comparable. Stain resistance is slightly better in some independent tests (especially against tree sap). 10-year warranty, transferable.
Best for: shops that want a flagship film without paying the XPEL brand premium. Customer awareness is lower so the shop needs to do more brand education.
STEK DynoShield Korean brand that's grown significantly in the US over the past 5 years. Premium positioning, premium pricing. Self-healing is excellent. Optical clarity is excellent. 12-year warranty (longer than competitors).
Best for: shops targeting the high-end enthusiast market. STEK has strong following in the supercar/exotic community.
3M Pro Series 3M's professional installer line. Mid-to-premium positioning. Self-healing is good. Stain resistance is good. 10-year warranty.
Best for: shops that want the 3M brand recognition (3M is broadly recognized outside the aftermarket world).
LLumar Platinum / Platinum Plus LLumar (owned by Eastman, same as SunTek) is the most-installed window film brand in the US. Their PPF line is solid mid-tier with strong installer support.
Best for: shops already on the LLumar tinting side that want a one-brand supplier relationship.
Avery Dennison Supreme Defense Newer entrant, premium positioning, strong showing in 2024-2025. Self-healing performance is competitive. Pricing typically beats XPEL by 10-15%.
Best for: shops looking for a premium tier without the XPEL premium.
Self-healing — what to actually expect
"Self-healing" means minor scratches and swirl marks disappear when the film is heated. In real-world use: - Sun on a hot day: most films self-heal - Warm water from a wash: most films self-heal - Cold-climate winter: self-healing is slow or doesn't happen below ~50°F surface temp - Hair dryer on damaged area: works for all major brands
Deep scratches (down through the film to paint) won't self-heal in any brand. That's a panel-replacement event.
Pricing tiers (full-front sedan install)
- XPEL Ultimate Plus: $3,000-$4,500
- SunTek Reaction: $2,500-$3,800
- STEK DynoShield: $3,500-$5,000
- 3M Pro Series: $2,500-$3,800
- LLumar Platinum: $2,300-$3,500
- Avery Dennison Supreme Defense: $2,800-$4,000
Same coverage tier; the price difference is mostly brand premium + installer market positioning.
What we tell first-time PPF customers
"Any of the major flagship films from a reputable installer will give you 7-10 years of paint protection. Pick the installer first — review their photo gallery, check Google reviews, ask about warranty registration — then pick the film. The brand matters about 30%; the install matters about 70%."
The DAP question
XPEL DAP (Design Access Program) is XPEL's pre-cut kit library. SunTek has a comparable library. STEK has a smaller library. If a shop uses DAP kits exclusively, you're getting XPEL even if they market themselves as multi-brand — they're shaped by what DAP supports.
This isn't bad — DAP-cut PPF is faster + more consistent than hand-cut work. But it's worth knowing.
